In 1942 Evan Macrae sailed with the Battalion of the 1st Camerons to India. During 1944-45 he fought in the Burma Campaign, being appointed Pipe Major of the 1st Camerons in 1944
His well-known march Over the Chindwin commemorates the crossing of the river Chindwin by the 79th in December 1944 during the advance after the battle of Kohima
Evan eventually came to occupy the special place he created for himself as tutor in piping to the children in Lochaber. It was a job in which he undoubtedly found his personal fulfilment. His pupils adored him and he loved them. H e taught many excellent players, both boys and girls. The Lochaber Junior Pipe Band jointly formed and trained by Evan, became one of the most successful youth activities in Lochaber.
They played the old 79th tunes in a way to bring a tear to the eye of those who had heard them played across half the world.
This is his story, his reminiscence of a career that encompassed the playing of the highland bagpipe.
